Developing Excellence in Case Teaching and Writing

The Madan Mohanka Centre of Excellence in Case Method of Learning, IIMA, is organizing a 4-Day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) for faculty members from management and allied disciplines. The programme is designed to enable participants across disciplines and career stages to become effective case teachers and proficient case writers.


The FDP adopts a participant-centered approach and includes a mix of pedagogies such as case discussions, self-reflections, group discussions, classroom activities, presentations, and lectures facilitated by experienced faculty members of IIMA. The programme also emphasizes hands-on learning, including case development and structured mentoring support between programme visits.

The major objective of the programme is to enable faculty members across multiple disciplines and across different levels of their career to become effective case teachers and excellent case writers.

Visit 1 (3 days at IIMA campus) 

Module 1: Understanding Case Method and Participant-Centered Learning

  • Introduction to the case method
  • Managing a case class
  • Understanding various philosophies of the case method of learning
  • Creating engagement and impact in a case class

Module 2: Writing the Case

  • Selecting cases: what to write and what not to write
  • Primary and secondary sources: interviewing, data collection, and case drafting
  • Developing teaching notes and linking to research and learning objectives
  • Testing the case in the classroom

Module 3: Demo Case Class

  • A live case class conducted by IIMA faculty, followed by participant observation and discussion.


Mentoring Between Visits

Module 4: Mentoring

  • Teaching: Each participant will deliver a case class at their home institution, discuss the class plan with the assigned IIMA mentor, enable mentor observation through videoconferencing, and participate in a post-class debrief.
  • Case Writing: Participants will conduct interviews, collect data, refine and prepare the case draft and teaching note, and share progress with the assigned IIMA mentor.


Visit 2 (1 Day at IIMA Campus)

Module 5: Participant Presentations

  • Participants will present the cases they have developed, followed by detailed feedback sessions

Module 6: Open Discussions and Wrap-up

  • Open-ended discussions on all aspects of case teaching, case writing, and case research, followed by programme wrap-up and future roadmap

Faculty members from management and allied disciplines who are interested in developing capabilities in case teaching and case writing.

The participant would retain all rights on case authorship and is free to submit the draft case mentored during this FDP to any case repository or journal. Note that there is no guarantee that cases developed in this FDP would be registered at IIMA Case Centre; and, as per current rules, one of the authors must necessarily be a faculty member at IIMA for a case to be registered at IIMA Case Centre.
