Introduction to Case Pedagogy for Doctoral Students

NOTE: There is no participation fee for this programme, as the fee is sponsored by the Madan Mohanka Centre of Excellence in Case Method of Learning at IIM Ahmedabad.

The Madan Mohanka Centre of Excellence in Case Method of Learning, IIMA, is organizing a 2-Day Open Programme designed exclusively for doctoral students in management and related disciplines who are close to graduation.


The programme introduces participants to the participant-centered case method of teaching and learning. It includes a live case class demonstration and provides an overview of case writing, encouraging doctoral students to adopt this pedagogy in their academic careers.

The major objective of the programme is to enable doctoral students across management disciplines to understand and explore the case pedagogy.

1. Module 1: The Case Class

  • Introduction to the case method
  • Roles in a case class
  • Crafting class discussions
  • Demo class

2. Module 2: Writing the Case

  • Selecting the case context and the case format
  • Primary and secondary sources: interviewing, data collection, and preparing a case draft
  • The teaching note and its connection to extant research and learning agenda
  • Major sections of a case study
  • Writing the opening and closing sections
  • Publishing a case study

This programme is designed for doctoral students in management and allied disciplines who are likely to graduate within the next one year and must be nominated by their institutions/universities. The ideal participant is one who is enthusiastic about participant-centered learning and willing to explore this pedagogy.
